Twenty-five years ago, Pol Pot recruited uneducated people, or children too young to have learned anything, and sent these black-clad child soldiers of the Khmer Rouge, wearing their trademark checked scarves loosely tied around their necks, and marched them the into Cambodian capital, Phnom Penn. Pol Pot enabled the deaths of more than one million educated Cambodians, including anyone who had a talent or training to run a country.

He wanted his own country. His alone.
