Well, the fat moon is rising and it’s time to say goodnight
See you in the morning before the sun is up and shining bright
It’s time to put your pjs on and to sleep through all night long
Come morning I will dress you, and sing our brand-new song

But first your moonlit dreams will take you onward traveling
With your animal friends in a spaceship to stars so utterly dazzling
With an angel by your side to keep you safe in dreamland
Until you come back awake, and I’ll be waiting to hold your hand

But now is the time to take your bows and gently fall asleep
I’ve come through many ancient halls and stories of black sheep
Dear grandchild you are yet so young, and I have reached into old age
You have experienced two birthdays, yet your adventures fill my page

Come here, let me carry you, and lay you down grandchild
Sleep is heavy on your eyes, all the times you laughed and smiled
I’ll leave the curtains open, there’s that fat moon in the sky
Watch it shine and before you sleep, he’ll be waving you goodbye

Forever in my heart you’ll be, even when the sandman is near
Fall through all your dreams, there’ll never be reason to fear
Granddad has you safe and sound, hanging on to his grandchild
Faraway tonight I’ll be looking at you, eyes closed, heart so wild

I’ll always have sweet memories, when your mother complains to me
My child is under my feet, like a wild animal who wants to be free
I will smile and feel so proud, and whisper to her from above
Let him free to run, he isn’t trying to escape, he’s chasing after love
