Hearts for Pearl

Just a small thing

I didn’t write much yesterday; I was blocked by love. However, I did write some private things in my diary, as I try to do most days.

Considerable grief has been felt among this small band of friends and writers. We’ve all dealt with it differently, personally, and shared some of that sorrow.

Yesterday, I shared it by giving out hearts instead of written responses. Each one is a small tribute to innocence—to Pearl.

Ryan, Pearl’s father, shared his grief with me, his parents, and the parents of his wife, Melissa. We gathered together around the tiny coffin, which will be kept at home until her ‘going away celebration’ on Sunday.

He wanted our blessing on his decision to make Pearl's ceremony as bright and joyous as possible. Naturally, he received it wholeheartedly.

Nothing in all the record of a man’s life is more wonderful than how a man handles the death of a close one, how he performs his duties under stress, his own grief, and the grief of his wife, Melissa.

Ryan was not at all disciplined before he married Melissa. His father was a founding member of Greenpeace. Ryan was born in Canada and immigrated to England in 2012 to marry his bride.
