Just a wee story for you, lassie. In 1997 I was one of the Coastguard pilots involved in the Fastnet tragedy. My winchman’s name was Chalkie, not his real first name but if your surname was White, you were always blessed with the name Chalkie. Well the yacht race was smashed and torn up real bad by a storm in which fifteen sailors lost their lives. I was flying a Sikorsky Sea King. A flying pig, but the absolute best for that work. Chalkie, in conditions too terrible to describe went down on the line in fifteen foot swells, which meant he had to go into the water, swim to them, and one at a time secure them to the winch. He did this twice. When we got them aboard the chopper, both of them got on their knees to thank God! I was so fucking mad, when we dropped them off at hospital, I told them that God on that day was a guy called Chalkie! Bloody God, I tell you, takes credit for too much! I still see Chalkie when I go back and we get drunk together. He pulled 37 live people out in his career, and brought home the bodies of 14 dead souls. The Queen presented him with the OBE at the end of his service. When I go home he lets me wear it! 🤣
