Day 14: My Irish Crush
My first Irish crush was a schoolgirl, Susan Rafferty, and then a long time between Susan and Mary. Mary was six years younger than me, and at the time singing in pubs with her siblings.
The girl is as Irish as Irish can be, freewheeling, and the voice of a songbird. Mary loved folk music and as her life progressed, so did our relationship, a working relationship, as at the time I was working with the Chrysalis group as a writer. It was far from being a full-time occupation, as I was elsewhere committed, but it was lucrative pastime working independently.
Mary worked hard at her chosen career, that of becoming a folksinger but it wasn’t until the eighties that she gained recognition. By this time Mary had become a beauty, her voice beyond even that.
After ‘Katie’ which she sings on a bestselling album, Before it Get’s Dark, we didn’t see each other again for several years, meeting up in the States and staying with Jenny and me in Mendocino.
Mary spent some time with me in our little studio. She left with a song, one written in the eighties, but with the words changed to illustrate my new life with Jenny.
Yes, without a doubt, I had a crush on Mary Black.
But I fell in love with her voice.
