RSV in Babies

Each year, about 58,000 children aged five and younger are hospitalized due to RSV.

Three days ago, our granddaughter, Evie (short for Everley), was admitted to the hospital suffering from RSV. The symptoms in a three-month-old baby are short, shallow, rapid breaths and are more noticeable when the child shows signs of the chest and what is termed as ‘caving-in,’ meaning the chest wall sinking under the ribs and the child’s nostrils flaring.

This poem was written in a hospital, seeing the concern on the faces of my family as they deal with the fragility of life, placing the care of their child into the hands of professionals, and feeling helpless.

Fragile as a Butterfly

I’m spending my time
Seeing your little body
Loving you the way I do
Just come into the world
So tiny and so new

I will light a candle
It will be a flame of life
And pray for little Evie
All through the night
So that she will be alright

I see the faces of your parents
The tears they shed for you
A love that shines
Their love so bright
While they read you nursery rhymes

Your mother wants to feed you
To bring you to her breast
Not have feeding lines for long
Or oxygen
But her milk to make you strong

The medical staff looks over you
Take your temperature
Support your family through this trial
Because we all are suffering
Our little butterfly is so fragile
